World Humanitarian Day - 19 August ☺

The 2010 World Humanitarian Day project is a collaborative film shot in over 40 countries in under 9 weeks, on a shoestring budget - with the goal of showing the enormous diversity of places, faces and endeavors of humanitarian aid workers in 2010.

It was filmed by humanitarian staff and freelance filmmakers from around the globe (over 50 contributors in total) with all time donated.

Dunia ini adalah ruang yang ditempati oleh manusia sejak zaman Adam. Di dunia ini manusia berkembang biak. Di dunia ini manusia berkarya. Dan di dunia ini pula manusia dapat terus mempertahankan eksistensinya. Maka, sudah sepantasnya jika manusia ini memperlakukan dunia ini dengan baik. Sudah sepantasnya pula jika manusia memberikan sesuatu kepada dunia ini. Ya, sudah menjadi kewajiban setiap manusia yang pernah dihembuskan nafasnya ke muka bumi ini, untuk "mamayu hayuning bawana". Menjadi kewajiban setiap manusia untuk "berbuat sesuatu yang mencerahkan dunia".

Mamayu hayuning bawana sama sekali tidak berarti manusia harus melakukan hal-hal yang luar biasa dan menakjubkan yang akan terus dikenang berabad-abad kemudian. Mamayu hayuning bawana juga sama sekali tidak berkaitan dengan hal-hal yang harus dilakukan oleh orang-orang besar, orang-orang yang berpengaruh, atau orang-orang yang punya kedudukan.

Mamayu hayuning bawana lebih terkait dengan keyakinan teguh dan kesungguhan tekad terhadap apa yang seseorang kerjakan. Yang pertama adalah keyakinan teguh. Manusia harus yakin sepenuh hati bahwa apa yang ia kerjakan dapat memberikan manfaat paling tidak kepada dirinya sendiri, baru kemudian memberikan manfaat untuk orang lain.

Keyakinan teguh juga berarti elan/misi yang melandasi apa yang seseorang kerjakan. Tanpa elan, tidak ada artinya apa yang dikerjakan manusia. Maka dari itu, pemulung yang tiap hari bekerja dengan semangat agar anaknya bisa sekolah tinggi, dia lebih mengerti arti dari mamayu hayuning bawana dibandingkan dengan pengusaha sukses yang dilandasi semangat cuma ingin kaya.

Kedua, adalah kesungguhan tekad. Elan yang menggebu akan sia-sia tanpa tekad baja. Keyakinan teguh baru modal dasar, sedangkan penggeraknya adalah kesungguhan tekad. Ibaratnya, jika tersedia mobil yang bagus untuk perjalanan Jakarta-Bandung, maka itu akan sia-sia jika tidak ada niat untuk mengemudikannya.

Kesungguhan tekad seringkali menutupi modal dasar yang mungkin tidak terlalu bagus. Lihat saja contoh beberapa orang hebat yang mungkin tanpa sadar sudah menjalankan mamayu hayuning bawana. Berapa kali kegagalan yang dilakukan Alexander The Great, Isaac Newton, Michael Jordan, mungkin tidak terhitung. Tapi mereka tidak menjadi lembek akan kegagalan itu. Kesungguhan tekad mengalahkan segalanya. Kesungguhan tekad yang dilandasi semangat bahwa apa yang sedang mereka lakukan ini akan membuat dunia menjadi lebih cerah.

Sangat disayangkan jika seseorang tidak sempat mempraktekkan atau bahkan memahami arti dari mamayu hayuning bawana. Maka dari itu, untuk semua pembaca tulisan ini, lakukanlah apa yang anda lakukan dengan keyakinan teguh dan kesungguhan tekad. Apapun yang anda lakukan, walaupun itu mungkin kelihatan remeh dan sepele, dasarilah dengan elan bahwa yang anda lakukan dapat berguna untuk orang lain, elan untuk membuat dunia ini lebih cerah. Kemudian, jalankanlah elan itu dengan bersungguh-sungguh sampai anda merasa bahwa sudah memberikan yang terbaik.

Tidak ada yang salah dengan apa yang seseorang lakukan, selama itu dilandasi dengan semangat untuk mamayu hayuning bawana. Maka, apa pun pekerjaan anda, lakukanlah dengan bersungguh-sungguh. Yakinlah bahwa dengan kesungguhan itu paling tidak akan memberi manfaat untuk diri anda sendiri. Yakinlah, bahwa itu akan memberi manfaat untuk sekitar, sehingga kita tidak menyesal telah dilahirkan di dunia ini, karena kita sudah turut berbuat sesuatu yang mencerahkan dunia.



Kampung Kids Foundation ☺

Yayasan Kampung Kids is an organization set up by Indonesian and expatriates for the purpose of providing basic nutrition, healthcare and education for the needy children in local communities.

I had the pleasure volunteering at Kampung Kids in Pejaten Barat for a couple of months ago, every saturday morning. In that time I have met maybe 15-20 children.

We've learned some of our letters and numbers in Bahasa Indonesia and English. We've learned some Indonesian and English songs. We're making things and some "arts&crafts" with glue, paint, scissors, glitter, paper, crayons. Read some books and played with some of educational toys too.

The way they asked, the way they told stories...their expressions...priceless :)

I'm planning to volunteer again. So, if you want to join me and you're looking for a wonderful experience and a fantastic way to give, let's help them. Life can be tough for kids without an education. Little things do count :)
