It's sushi time! My cousin is here to teach me how to make sushi hehehe. Here it is...
What you need:
We used short grain rice
Smoked salmon
Crab meat
Rice vinegar
Cucumber
Sugar
Salt
Nori (Japanese seaweed)
Soy Sauce
Kikoman
Wasabi
To make sushi rice:
- 3 cups Japanese rice
- 3 1/4 cups water
- 1/3 cup rice vinegar
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
After washing and soaking Japanese rice, (short grain rice) cook and let it steam. Prepare sushi vinegar (sushi-zu) by mixing rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a sauce pan. Put the pan on low heat and heat until the sugar dissolves. Cool the vinegar mixture. Spread the hot steamed rice into a large plate or a large bowl. Sprinkle the vinegar mixture over the rice and fold the rice with rice spatula) quickly. Be careful not to smash the rice. Allow to cool to room temperature before using the rice.
Take a sheet of nori (Japanese seaweed) and lay it down on a sushi rolling mat. Spread the sushi rice over the nori in a thin layer. Then add your fillings such as crab meat, thinly sliced smoked salmon, cucumbers.
After you have spread the rice and added the fillings, use the mat to roll it into a large sushi roll. The last step to making sushi at home is to cut the long sushi roll into 1 to 1.5 inch bite-size sushi rolls. Then serve with soy sauce for dipping or wasabi.
The result wasn't that perfect but hey, at least we tried and it taste good :p Go have a try!
